It’s free to play and does include gacha elements but, at its core, this is an epic single player JRPG the likes of which we usually see on console. The castle is fenced off and considered dangerous, but is clearly visible from the road.Another Eden is a brand new mobile JRPG that features development talent from the likes of Chrono Trigger, Luminous Arc 2, and Bintochan. In 1712 the castle was sold to the Duff Earl of Fife, who probably oversaw the partial demolition of the castle for materials, as so often was the case with others of his properties. It is likely from the presence of datestones that the extension to the castle took place in 1677 or thereabouts, and that it was George Leslie who was the owner at the time. It is said that the Meldrums held Eden for about 150 years, so it is not clear whether the castle would have been built by the Meldrums or the Leslies. There is no mention of the castle at this date – and indeed the castle does not appear in documents prior to the 17th century, by which time it had certainly been built for some time, and had passed into the ownership of the Leslie family. It is not clear from which parent he inherited Eden, but the Barclays seem more likely as the lands were required to be regranted to William and Elizabeth upon their marriage in 1503.

By 1509, the lands of Eden were in the hands of Thomas Meldrum, son of the laird of Fyvie and a lady of the Barclay family who held extensive lands in the area. The lands remained a bargaining chip, and were later held by the Stewart Earls of Buchan and the Macdonald Earls of Ross. After their deaths, it is known that the Regent Albany had control of the barony, and in the 1440s it was held by Alexander Seton, future Earl of Huntly. When he fell from grace in 1390, the barony became part of a power struggle between the Countess and Sir James Lindsay. Kingedward has the remains of an impressive castle of the Comyns which was repaired by Ross and maintained (in poor condition) by Alexander Stewart.

It is unlikley there was any defensive structure at Eden in this period. The barony of Kingedward was granted to the Earl of Ross, and it was in right of his wife, the Countess of Ross, that Alexander Stewart claimed the barony of Kingedward – and was granted with it the title Earl of Buchan. The earldom of Buchan had been broken up by Robert Bruce, and granted out piecemeal to his supporters after the defeat and overthrow of the Comyns in 1308. This Barony was one of the principal parts of the medieval earldom of Buchan, held by the Comyn family in the 13th century and revived for Alexander Stewart, the son of King Robert II. A turret stair in the re-entrant angle provided access to the upper floors, and a small winding stair in the south-eastern corner led to one of the cellars.Įden is mentioned in a document of 1411 as being in the Barony of Kingedward. Above this the hall occupied the whole of the first floor.

The assumption would be that the barmkin extended to the north and west. The basement of the hall block had a corridor running the full length of the hall block, and a doorway was knocked through the north gable into the extension, leaving two vaulted cellars. This appears to have been extended at some point with a two storey building being added to the northern gable of the hall block, and the partial remains of a round tower can also be seen however in both cases the remains are fragmentary and unclear. The tower house was built to the L-plan, with the square wing containing the staircase to the first floor slightly offset in the south-west corner. The castle is a ruined tower house, with no remains surviving of a barmkin or subsidiary buildings. There appears to be no wider strategic reason for the castle being here, indicating that it was built as the seat of an estate rather than for wider defensive reasons. The site is defensive, but not strong, and is overlooked by the summit of the ridge to the north, as well as the ridge to the south. It is built towards the southern end of a ridge, separated from the Kingedward burn by another minor burn, and immediately to the south a smaller burn flows across the width of the ridge down into the Deveron.

Eden Castle overlooks the junction of the Burn of Kingedward with the River Deveron a short distance to the south of the town of Banff.
